Hovering over the ‘Report’ item in the menu bar shows the reports that are available in your appliance as shown below.

Reports are useful in that they visualize information about system operation, giving you visibility into the workload that your appliance is managing, how effective its features are, and estimations on the amount of money saved by using your appliance.

The various features of 'Reports' are discussed in the following sections:

Report Elements

Each of the reports has several key elements, as shown in the figure below.

  • Report Title– contains the title of the report, which aligns with the name of the entry in the Report menu bar that was clicked to visit the page
     
  • Report Focus– indicates whether the report is showing values for the entire system or for an individual component such as a cloud account or a volume
     
  • Report Description– provides a brief description of what the report is visualizing
     
  • Filters and Settings– allows you to adjust what data is shown in the plot area.  A section below is provided specifically to discuss filters and settings
     
  • Y-Axis Labels and Reference Points– the label indicates what type of value is being plotted.  Reference points are generated periodically to simplify reading of the chart
     
  • X-Axis Labels and Reference Points– the label indicates what type of value is being plotted.  In most cases, the X-axis will plot time (client computer time, see the note below).  Reference points (timestamps) are generated periodically to simplify reading of the chart
     
  • Plot Area– the plot area contains the X/Y plot of the data series being displayed
     
  • Legend – when multiple values are being plotted as separate series, the legend allows you to distinguish what each series is by color
     
  • Printer Friendly Version Link– when clicked, a pop-up window is spawned, containing an image version of the entire page that can be printed or copied for use outside of the system

Report Filters

 
The number and type of report filters varies by report. The various filters that can be encountered in the Web UI and how they are used is discussed below.

 

  • Subsystem – allows you to filter on a specific plot element relevant to the report being viewed. Subsystem is used when there are multiple instances of correlated sets of series that can be displayed that would otherwise not be relevant when displayed together.

 

  • Cloud Account– when present, using the ‘Cloud Account’ filter will allow you to filter from a system-wide view encompassing all cloud accounts to a view specific to one individual cloud account. In order to support granular statistics for a specific cloud account, you must check the ‘Enable Monitoring’ checkbox in the cloud account properties page, and ensure that all associated volumes also have ‘Enable Monitoring’ selected.

 

  • Volume – when present, using the ‘Volume’ filter will allow you to filter from a system-wide view encompassing all volumes to a view specific to one individual volume. In order to support granular statistics for a specific volume, you must check the ‘Enable Monitoring’ checkbox in the volume properties page.

 

  • Time Resolution– allows you to increase or decrease the granularity of time-scale reports.
    • Seconds – displays the last thirty minutes of per-second samples.
    • Minutes – displays the last four hours of per-minute samples. Per-minute samples are summarized based on the per-second samples contained within that minute.
    • Hours – displays the last seven days of per-hour samples. Per-hour samples are summarized based on the per-minute samples contained within that hour.
    • Days – displays approximately the last year (366 days to account for leap years) of per-day samples. Per-day samples are summarized based on the per-hour samples contained within that day.

  • I/O Operations per Second
  • Read/Write Bytes over Time
  • Network Throughput

Checking the ‘Show Peaks’ setting will add an additional series to the plot area, showing the maximum value encountered during that sample period in addition to the average value that is normally plotted.

 

  • Series – allows you to filter on a particular series that is being plotted within that subsystem. When applied, only that series is displayed in the chart.

 

  • Chart Type– multiple chart types are provided to allow you to visualize the data in the way you feel is most effective. Not every chart type is available with each report, as some chart types are not useful for certain reports.
    • Line – line charts present each series of plots as a line. Lines can overlap one another, and each is measured directly according to its position when compared to the X and Y axis values.
    • Stacked Area – stacked area charts present each series of plots as an area. Areas do not overlap, as they are stacked on top of one another. Area values are not measured directly against axis values; rather, the area value is measured by subtracting the value of the lower boundary of the area from the upper boundary of the area. Stacked area charts are useful in showing the sum total of all series together while allowing you to determine which series contributed the most or the least to the sum total.
    • Stacked Area 100– stacked area 100 charts are similar to stacked area charts. The primary difference is that the Y-axis values are always 0 to 100 percent, and the amount of area consumed by a series in the stacked area 100 chart is based on the discrete plot value of the series as a percentage of the sum total of all series being plotted.
    • Bar Chart– a bar chart presents data as rectangular bars with lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. These charts are typically used for plotting discrete data.
    • Pie – pie charts show a circle representing 100%, and slices for each series. The size of the slice is based on the percentage of the sum.

Refresh and Auto-Refresh

When changing the filters for a report, you must click the ‘Refresh’ button to apply the filter. Reports do not automatically refresh. If you want to refresh the report to show the latest values, you must click the ‘Refresh’ button. If the ‘Time Resolution’ is specified in seconds, then the reports will also display an ‘Auto Refresh’ field. This field when checked will dynamically update the chart. The refresh rate for Auto Refresh feature is 5 seconds.

Report Tooltips

Tooltips are available within reports by hovering your mouse over any of the plotted points. A hover-over will appear that shows the value being plotted and, where appropriate, the timestamp of the value (for charts showing plotted data over time).
