Battery Replacement

Last modified

The appliance head unit PCM has an additional battery pack that provides power to allow an application to save data in the event of loss of AC power to the enclosure. This battery pack is referred to as the 'Backup Battery Module'. The backup battery module exists only for the head unit in your StorSimple system (and not the EBOD enclosure) and is seated on the 764W PCM. This page discusses the battery replacement and maintenance procedure in the following sections:

Removing the Backup Battery Module

The Backup Battery Module is a Field Replacement Unit (FRU). Outside of the PCM, the battery module should have the end caps installed and be stored in its original packaging. The packaging will hold the end caps in place. It will also provide an element of safety protection while the battery is stored.

To replace the backup battery module, perform the following steps:

  • In the Web UI, navigate to Manage Hardware and under 'Shared Components' look at the status of the battery as shown below.

  • Identify the power supply (PCM) in which the battery has failed. The above figure shows a battery failed in PCM 0.

  • Locate the backplane of the head unit and use the following figure as a guide to identify PCM 0.

  • The battery LED on PCM 0 corresponding to 'Battery Fault' should be lit. See the following figure for guidance.

  • Remove this PCM with a failed battery. Refer to PCM replacement procedure for details on how to remove a PCM.
  • With the PCM removed, rotate the battery module handle upward as indicated in the figure below and pull to remove the battery.

  • Use the end caps from the replacement module and install those on both the ends of the Backup Battery Module as shown in the figure below. Place the module in the FRU replacement packaging.

Return the defective unit to StorSimple for proper servicing and handling.

Installing the Backup Battery Module

Perform the following steps to install the replacement battery module -

  • Place the module in the opening on top of the PCM in proper orientation.
  • Press to seat the connector.
  • Replace the PCM based on guidelines detailed in Installing the PCM procedure.
  • After the replacement is complete, access the Web UI and navigate to Manage Hardware and verify the status of battery to ensure that the verification is successful.

Normal Backup Battery Maintenance

The backup battery module provides power to the controller during a power loss event. It allows the user application to save critical data prior to shutting down in a controlled manner. With two fully charged batteries in the PCMs, the system can handle two consecutive loss events.

The Hardware page in Web UI will indicate if the battery is malfunctioning or when end-of-life is approaching. This page will show a DEGRADED state for end-of-life approaching, and FAILED for end-of-life reached. Note, though, that the battery can report end-of-life when it really just needs a full charge cycle.

The user is suggested the following course of action -

  • If the DEGRADED state appears upon reboot after AC power has been lost and the batteries have powered the chassis, do nothing for 12 hours.
    • If, after 12 hours of continuous connection to AC power with both canisters and PCMs running, the state is still degraded, then the battery needs to be swapped. Please contact StorSimple support for a replacement.
    • If, instead, the state becomes OK, then the battery is fine, and just needed a maintenance discharge.

  • If the DEGRADED state appears without an associated loss of AC power, and with the PCM switched on and connected to AC power, then the battery needs to be swapped. Contact technical support to order a replacement Backup Battery Module.

The failed battery needs to be disposed of as per the national regulations.
