Controller Module Replacement

This page explains how to remove and replace a controller module for the head unit of a StorSimple appliance. This two-step process is discussed in the following sections. The last section discusses the procedure to identify an 'active' controller.

Removal of a Controller Module

Controller modules can be removed and replaced while the system is operational if the other controller module is functional.  Before removing or replacing a controller module, ensure that the faulty module is powered off and all cables are disconnected from the controller module. 

 

 Note.png Note: Should a controller module fail or need replacement, ensure that the other controller module is in an ‘active’ state prior to replacing the failed controller module. Do not remove both controller modules concurrently. Should a controller failover be in progress, do not shutdown the standby controller module or remove it from the chassis. After a controller failover, wait at least five minutes before removing either controller module. 

Note.png Note: Throughout the replacement procedure, the user needs to continuously monitor the 'Hardware' page in the Web UI by navigating to Manage Hardware. A green status for the controller indicates that the controller is 'healthy', a yellow status indicates that the controller is 'recovering' or 'degraded' and a red indicates a 'failed' controller.

 

Observe the following precautions when handling a controller module:

  • Always handle the controller with two hands.
  • Hold the controller from the sides; do not touch the connectors in the back. The connector pins in the back can easily get damaged.
  • If a controller module needs to be replaced or returned to StorSimple, it should be immediately placed in an antistatic bag.

 

Perform the following steps to remove a controller module:

  • Identify which controller module has failed.
    • In Web UI, access Manage  Hardware.
    •  The status of either 'Controller 0' or 'Controller 1' should be red indicating a failure.
    • Ensure that only one module has failed and the other module status is green prior to replacement.
    • Note that the failed controller will also be a 'Standby' controller.
  • Next, locate the failed controller module in the appliance.
  • Use the following appliance backplane diagram for guidance.

  • For the faulty module, remove all the network cables (connected to MGMT and DATA ports) connected to this controller.
  • If using a 7520, SAS cables that connect the controller to the EBOD controller should also be removed.
  • For the faulty module, grasp the module latch between the thumb and forefinger.

  • Gently squeeze the two together to release the controller latch.
  • Using the latch as a handle, slide the controller out of the chassis.

Installing a Controller Module

Perform the following steps to install the replacement controller:

  • Check if there is any damage to the interface connector. Do not install if any of the connector pins are damaged or bent. 
  • To insert a new controller module, slide the controller module into the chassis while the latch is fully released.

  • With the controller module inserted, begin closing the latch while continuing to push the controller module into the chassis. The latch will engage to guide the controller into place.

  • You're done once the latch  snaps into place.
  • The 'OK LED' (as shown  in 'Removal of Controller Module') should now be on. It may take up to 5 minutes for the controller and the LED to come up.
  • Reconnect all network and SAS cables (if using a 7520) to this controller.
  • To verify that the replacement is successful, in your Web UI, access Manage Hardware and ensure that both 'Controller 0' and 'Controller 1' are reported 'healthy' (status is green).

Identifying an Active Controller on your Appliance

There are many situations that require a user to locate the active controller. To determine which of the two controllers is the active controller in the appliance unit, perform the following steps.

  • Look at the appliance backplane.
  • Locate the LED above the DATA2 port. Use the diagram below as an aid.

  • If this LED is blinking, then it indicates that controller is the active controller and the other one is the standby controller.
