Appliance Serial Console Access

Table of contents

This document (TR00003) explains how the appliance model 1010 can be accessed using a serial console cable.  The shell that is accessible via the serial console is protected with a password, and thus, should only be used when working with StorSimple support directly.

A serial console is required for this operation.  One should have been provided with your appliance model 1010.  If not, a serial console that works with a network switch, router, or firewall should suffice.  In the event that you do not have a serial port on your laptop, we recommend using a USB to serial adapter, such as the Keyspan USA-19HS (see http://www.amazon.com/Keyspan-Speed-.../dp/B0000VYJRY).

Terminal emulation software is also required.

For Windows laptops, any of the following are appropriate:
  • Hyper Terminal
  • PuTTY
  • SecureCRT
  • Any other that supports COMn access

Terminal emulation settings:
  • 9600 baud
  • 8 data bits
  • 1 stop bit
  • No parity bits
  • No hardware flow control, error correction, or compression

Plug in your serial cable, or USB to serial adapter, and connect the other end of the cable to the serial port on the back of the appliance model 1010.  The ports on the back of the appliance model 1010 are shown below.

In your terminal emulation software, choose the correct COM port.  If you do not know which COM port is used, please refer to the documentation provided by your USB to serial adapter, or see your Windows Control Panel and Device Manager.

If you do not have a serial cable, you can directly attach a keyboard and monitor to the back of the appliance model 1010 using the ‘Video/VGA’ and ‘Keyboard’ ports as shown above.
