<< PrevNext >>

This guide describes the procedure to upgrade the firmware on StorSimple appliance disk. This procedure is applicable to the 5000 and 7000 series of StorSimple appliances running v2.1.1 (2.1.1.518). The entire firmware upgrade takes approximately 30 minutes (does not include time to shut down and power up your hosts). The procedure is detailed in the following sections:

About Disk Firmware Upgrade

Please read the following information prior to performing the disk firmware upgrade.

Warning: The disk firmware upgrade is a disruptive procedure and for the entire duration of this upgrade:

  • StorSimple appliance will be offline.
  • No operations can be performed.
  • Web UI will not be available.
  • StorSimple volumes cannot be accessed by hosts.

The firmware upgrade takes about 30 minutes. Please schedule for a longer downtime to account for time required to shut down and power up your host.

Pre-requisites

Prior to upgrading, please ensure the following:

  • Appliance is running v2.1.1.518. This is the only tested software version to apply this upgrade. If your current appliance software does not meet this criterion, upgrade your appliance to v2.1.1.518 prior to applying the disk firmware upgrade.
  • Ensure that the appliance has serial console access. Refer to Serial Console User Guide v2.1.1 for details on how to access your appliance serial console.
  • Navigate to Home → Manage → Hardware and ensure that all the components are healthy (as indicated by green status). If any of the components is not healthy, please contact StorSimple Support team to provide guidance on next steps.
  • Access the Seagate FTP site at  ftp://ftp.seagate.com/storsimple/Patch8/ to download “storsimple-2.1.1.518-B59-disk-firmware-bundle-install-patch.tar”.
  • Prior to starting the upgrade, you must take a cloud snapshot of all the data on the appliance. This will allow you to recover the data in case you experience any issues with the upgrade. If you receive errors while taking a cloud snapshot, contact StorSimple Support for assistance.

Pre-upgrade Steps

Perform the following steps on the host prior to disk firmware upgrade.

  • Stop all the host I/Os on StorSimple volumes.
  • Choose the next set of steps based on whether you are on a Windows, VMware or Linux host.

On Windows or Linux host

Perform the following procedure on the host:

  • If it is possible to do so, please shut down your Windows or Linux host.
  • If it is not possible to shut down your host, take the volumes offline and disconnect the iSCSI session. For detailed instructions on how to unmount the volumes and disconnect the iSCSI session, refer to version-specific OS manuals.

On VMware vSphere host

On VMware, the upgrade can be performed without taking the volumes offline. Depending upon whether the ESX server is hosting only StorSimple volumes or StorSimple and non-StorSimple volumes or mixed volumes, the steps required are different.

ESX/ESXi server has VMs with only StorSimple Volumes

In this scenario, the ESX server has VMs that have all the Virtual Machine Disks (VMDKs) only on StorSimple volumes.

  • Power off all the VMs.
  • Place the ESX server in ‘Maintenance Mode’.
    • Connect to ESX server using vSphere client.
    • Right-click the ESX server and select ‘Enter Maintenance Mode’.
ESX/ESXi Server has VMs with StorSimple volumes and VMs with Non-StorSimple Volumes

In this scenario, the ESX server has some VMs that are running on StorSimple volumes and other VMs running on non-StorSimple volumes.

  • Power off VMs that are hosted on StorSimple volumes only.
ESX/ESXi Server has VMs with mixed disks

In this scenario, the VM has a VMDK on a StorSimple volume and another VMDK on a non-StorSimple volume.

  • Power off the VMs.

Upgrade Software

Perform the following steps to upgrade to v2.1.1 software.

  • Navigate to Home Manage Software Upgrade page. Proceed to Step 1 that involves uploading the software package.

  • Click the Upload File button. Select package storsimple-2.1.1.518-B59-disk-firmware-bundle-install-patch.tar” and click on Upload. The software will begin to upload. You have the option to cancel or pause the upload by using the respective buttons.

  • When the upload is completed successfully, proceed to Step 2. You may also decide to use the 'Reset' button to delete the uploaded package. Step 2 in upgrade involves checking the following conditions.
    1. A cloud snapshot of the volumes has been taken (completed) in the past 24 hrs.
    2. A version compatibility in the various modules
    3. Cloud accessibility
    4. No critical hardware alert(s) in the system

If any of these criteria are not met, this check will fail. If there is a version mismatch or a critical hardware alert, please contact StorSimple Support to resolve the issue.

  • Click on 'Start Validation' to initiate the validation process as shown below.

  • If the validation is successful, proceed to Step 3 and start the actual upgrade. If the validation check fails, then a 'View Results' button is presented to the user. Click on 'View Results' to understand why the validation check failed.
  • Resolve the issue and initiate the validation check again. If the validation is successful, proceed to next step that involves the actual upgrade.

  • Click on 'Upgrade'. You will see a 'Confirm Software Upgrade' pop-up.

  • Type "Confirm" and click on 'Confirm' to proceed with the upgrade.
  • Once the upgrade starts, you will be notified. The appliance will then be offline.

Note: The Web UI will not be accessible during the firmware upgrade (about 20 minutes).

  • After 20 minutes, refresh your web browser and access the Web UI.
  • Log in to the Web UI. You will see an alert notification that the upgrade has completed successfully.
  • Navigate to Manage → Hardware and ensure that all the hardware components are 'healthy' as indicated by green status.

Post Upgrade Steps

Perform the following steps on the host after the disk firmware upgrade is complete.

On Windows or Linux host

Perform the following steps on the host:

  • If you had powered down your Windows host prior to upgrade, power it up now.
  • If you had just taken the volumes offline, bring back the volumes online and reconnect the iSCSI session. For detailed instructions on how to unmount the volumes and disconnect the iSCSI session, refer to version-specific OS manuals.

On VMware vSphere host

Based on your use-case, perform one of the following set of steps:

ESX/ESXi Server has VMs with StorSimple volumes only
  • From vSphere client, right-click and come out of ‘Maintenance Mode’. Power on the VMs again.
ESX/ESXi Server has VMs with StorSimple volumes and VMs with non-StorSimple volumes
  • Power on the VMs that were powered off.
ESX/ESXi Server has VMs with both StorSimple and non-StorSimple volumes
  • Power on the VMs.
